After the relocation of the Hartford Whalers to Raleigh, NC (to become the Carolina Hurricanes), the city of Hartford has been the home of the AHL Hartford Wolf*Pack (highest minor league affiliate of the NHL's New York Rangers). Over their time, the Wolf*Pack have had the leagues highest winning percentage over the last 10 years.
After losing a season to a lock-out, the NHL signed a new collective bargaining agreement, enabling smaller markets such as Hartford to be able to support an NHL franchise.
